Lincoln Girls Water Polo took first place in the Western States Tournament this past weekend. There were sixteen teams in the bracket. The team went 4-0 to take first place in the tournament that took place at Oakdale High School.

Co-captain and Lincoln High senior Courtney Smith scored 11 goals throughout the four games to carry the team to a first place finish. Smith said, “We started off to a rough start but as we played more games we definitely improved as a team and were able to beat some good teams. The team as a whole just played very well.”

Senior player Anne Asplund, who also serves as co-captain of the team said that she really felt the team played great. Before every game she leads the team in the huddle to get them pumped for the game and said, “Everyone was excited to play and we were all having fun in the huddle.”

The team has two games left in the season. In their final game, they play against their crosstown rival St. Mary’s, which should be a very exciting and emotional game as they have their eyes set on qualifying for regionals.
