A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder
Book Review
Holly Jackson’s book trilogy, A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder follows Pippa Fitz-Amobi, a high-schooler who has a passion for true crime. As she approaches the end of high school, Pippa’s senior project is one to go down in the history of her hometown of Fairview. Pippa’s leading question is one that changed her whole life and the lives of everyone in town. Who killed Andie Bell?
With the first book published in 2019, this Young Adult murder mystery novel written by Holly Jackson has received much love from the fans on Goodreads. Her first book in the series titled A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder was a nominee for a Goodreads Choice Award in the Young Adult Fiction category in 2020. The final book in the series, Good Girl, Bad Blood was also nominated for this same category in 2021, followed by the release of her newest book in late 2022, Five Survive.
Andie Bell was murdered by Sal Singh, and that case was closed. But Pippa didn’t believe that. As Pippa inserts herself into this closed investigation in the name of her senior project, she uncovers truths that had been hidden for five years. Hidden secrets come to light, and as the truth surfaces, Pip finds herself deeper and deeper into trouble. People are betrayed, lies are spread, and things get messy as Pip discovers what really happened to Fairview’s good girl, Andie Bell.
This trilogy is absolutely in my top three. Holly Jackson’s ability to illustrate a story through her words is impeccable. The characters move the plot along as their stories and lives dramatically unfold. Not only do we see how this mystery affects Pippa’s life, but the lives of everybody around her. Everyone is connected, and readers see every which way the trail leads. This book trilogy is rumored to be turned into a TV show to be aired on BBC Three sometime this year, however, no further news has been released.
Overall, A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder is a must-read. The storytelling alongside the deep characters is something that everyone must enjoy. Jackson’s ability to keep readers on the edge of their seats throughout the entire series without being predictable is truly mesmerizing. Even as a young adult novel, Holly Jackson does not hold back. The thrilling mystery followed by a romantic subplot is written so beautifully that readers can’t help but get enough, and with three books making up the series, Holly Jackson certainly delivers. This trilogy takes readers on a deep dive through mystery, love, thriller, and murder alongside both its lovable and morbid characters, and should be on everyone’s to-read list.
