Content Warning: Article discussing Suicide and Mental Illness
Stockton- We live in a society where many people believe that death is an acceptable option. This mentality raises the question: is this really okay? Young people, many of whom have just started their lives, may feel overwhelmed, miserable, and judged. Our society continues to allow both young and elderly individuals to suffer in silence until, unfortunately, they feel they have no other choice. It’s time for us to stand up as a community!
In 2022, 49,000 individuals took their own lives, which amounts to one person every 11 minutes. This statistic is alarming, and the rate of suicide continues to grow. As high school students, we are aware that the majority of those affected are young people. It could even be your friend, and you might not even know it. It is crucial to be mindful of how we speak to others, especially freshmen, as our words can significantly impact someone’s mental health.
If you are a student struggling and feel like you have no one to talk to, seek comfort in something that brings you joy. Many students are aware that school counselors are available, but often they feel judged and reluctant to reach out. Similarly, friends may not always offer the support needed. Remember, you always have alternatives. If you don’t have someone to confide in, try to find activities or hobbies that you love to help distract you from difficult feelings.
Another option might be attending church. In 2024, 2.2 million people were positively impacted by their faith. You might think church is boring, but many communities host engaging and fun services. For instance, Lifesong Church, located on Country Club closer to downtown, offers services every Sunday at 8:15 AM, 9:30 AM, 11:15 AM, 12:30 PM, and 2 PM. If your schedule is tight, they also hold Pursue Night on Wednesdays at 6:30 PM, where you can participate in worship and prayer and meet amazing people.
There are many resources available, so please don’t give up. You have so much to offer the world. Remember, each person is uniquely beautiful, so don’t underestimate your worth based on someone else’s opinion. If you know a friend who is considering suicide, help them find the joy in their lives. Reminding them that they are loved can often change their perspective and help them reconsider their choices.
Always remember, there are people who love you more than you might realize. God loves you, your family cares for you, and many others do as well. Please take a moment to rethink your choices.
