Stockton– Sometimes the world can feel a bit overwhelming and chaotic, this teacher stands out as a source of hope and inspiration to most. He shows us by sharing his experiences and respecting others. His dedication to his students, shaped by his unique background, truly deserves recognition.
While he was younger, he was surrounded by some friends who had told stories about the military. Those stories led him to join the military, viewing it as a pathway to not only serve and protect but also to experience life in ways that others might not. Through his years of service, he made lifelong friends, traveled to multiple countries, and gained a better understanding of cultures that are often ignored in typical school settings.
During his time while he was stationed in Okinawa, he accepted the local community by joining in on friendly basketball games with local players. This experience wasn’t just about sports; it was a culture exchange that built trust and friendships. When invited to join their official basketball team, he seized the opportunity not only to develop his skills but also to understand different perspectives and ways of life. For him, basketball became a metaphor for unity and teamwork, valuable lessons he now tells to his students.
After deciding to leave the military, partly due to changes in retirement benefits and a yearning to be closer to his family, this exceptional individual turned to education. He wanted to share the lessons he learned during his service such as discipline, resilience, and the importance of appreciating diverse cultures. While he acknowledges the darker parts of humanity he witnessed, he also highlights that those experiences have shaped his understanding and approach to teaching.
In the classroom, he concentrates on teaching values that go beyond just academics. His military background gives him a unique perspective on discipline and structure, which he combines with kindness and a friendly attitude. He motivates students to think deeply about the world, encouraging their understanding and appreciation for different cultures.
Though he claims to be “a little old and out of shape,” as he said at his interview, for the rigorous basketball games of his youth, his passion for the game—just like his passion for teaching—remains strong. He continues to participate in sports, understanding the role it plays in building community and friendships, which he encourages his students to embrace.
In the classroom, he isn’t alone, he shares the space with his co-teachers, Mrs. Roemer and Ms. Men, who each bring their unique strengths to the team. Mrs. Roemer is a sturdy figure, someone who knows what she wants and stays committed to her goals. She is always available to listen to any problems students may have, providing both academic support and mental guidance. Her dependable presence helps create a sense of stability in the classroom.
On the other hand, Ms. Men is characterized by her kindness and willingness to help. She is always there for students, ready to lend an ear and provide support for any issues they might face. Her attitude makes students feel valued and heard. Together, the three of them try to balance a good structure to the classroom, working to create a more balanced classroom that encourages connection among the students.
