Stockton- The Student Senate is one of those little known things that exist on campus. Most students turn a blind eye to it, because it’s hardly even mentioned in their on campus and off campus life. With each passing school year the Student Senate gets more important with the amount of fresh ideas coming from old students, and even some of the newer students here at Lincoln.
What is the Student Senate? The Student Senate is an organization made up of many students with many different interests and academic levels . It includes the artsy students, athletic students, mathematicians, and even the history specialists. Along with the diversity in interests, the Student Senate includes students from grades 9-12, as well as different ethnicities and backgrounds. The Student Senate is meant to represent Lincoln as a school and promote the inclusivity we offer at Lincoln High School.
What is the purpose of the Student Senate? The purpose of the Student Senate is to not only represent Lincoln as a whole, but also to give back to the community. When interviewing the head of Student Senate, Principal Bender, she replied, “The purpose of the Student Senate is to really just give back to the community. We have some of our students who schedule fundraisers to help families in need. Just last year we donated some toys during Christmas to families who were struggling and couldn’t afford presents. Some of our students even go to middle schools to help prepare 8th graders for high school.” The Student Senate has even helped update the safety policies here at Lincoln High School to make sure we have a safe environment here on campus. Although the Student Senate is very active within our community here in Stockton, they don’t really contribute much to the student activities here on campus because that isn’t a part of what they do.
How can you get into the Student Senate? When asking Mrs. Bender about the accessibility of the Student Senate, she replied, “You must be recommended by a teacher or any staff on campus. I have had a couple of students come up to me and ask to be a part of it, but they don’t always get in. To me not only is diversity important, but also there are too many students to consider and it becomes really hard with the recommendations and the walk in requests.”
