Ethicality in the Fashion Industry! In? Or Out?

How fast moving trends can cause problems in the fashion industry.

STOCKTONWith the rise of social media trends, fashion can be a quickly fluctuating thing.  From 2020 to now, fashion trends have been moving faster than ever before.  Some might see this is a good thing, but others might not think so.  On one hand, it’s been more acceptable to be able to express yourself with a fashion sense, but some might see the fast-moving trends as non-eco-friendly.  Over consumerism has been a growing issue since the 1920s.  Ready to wear fashion was made for people to buy clothing straight from the store and to make fashion more accessible.  With the inclusion of social media in ordinary people’s lives, influencers are persuading people to buy new clothing and products at a dangerously fast rate.  This leads to new fashion trends very often.

Maggie Renwick, a senior at Lincoln, believes that high-waisted jeans are out for this season.  “I hate them, and I want them to leave.” Maggie also foresees that faux fur will be trending in these upcoming months.  Both low rise jeans and faux fur are extremely easy to find in a thrift store.

It can be hard to feel as if your wardrobe is trending as new trends keep growing at a rapid pace.  One solution to this is to find staple pieces to go in your closet that won’t go out of trend.  A timeless piece like a plain black top will never go out of trend and can be styled in many different and unique ways.  Having good basics in your closet makes it easier to build new outfits with different accessories.  Another solution is to shop second hand instead of buying from regular consumer stores.  Thrifting is a great way to find unique pieces of clothing that nobody else will have.  Vintage is in, and thrifting is an amazing way to find cute vintage pieces.  One last solution is to shop at more stores that prioritize the ethicality of their materials.  Most stores that source their materials ethically typically have better quality clothes.

It’s crucial that people do their part in not contributing to the overconsumption of clothes.  Having a wardrobe that you feel comfortable in is also crucial.  Healthy shopping habits can lead to a healthier fashion industry.
