There are so many fantastic clubs here at Lincoln High School. You may be asking yourself, why should I join a club? Clubs can be a great way to participate in campus activities and show school spirit. It’s also a great way to meet new people if you’ve just entered high school or just want to make some new friends. There are a plethora of different clubs on campus, some can cater to hobbies, like Crochet Club or Book Club—We also have volunteering clubs including: KEY Club and Commitment to Community. Additionally, there are many cultural clubs such as: Filipino Club, SEA, MECHA and many others. Lincoln High also has education-oriented clubs like Mathletes or STEM. There are so many amazing clubs for students to join and there is guaranteed there is a club that each student at Lincoln would enjoy!
A great way to join clubs is during Club Rush, an annual event that usually takes place near the end of the first month of school. Club Rush is an event where all clubs set up their booths and provide information on their club as well as providing ways to sign up for their clubs. Some clubs perform to display what kinds of activities take place in their clubs–luckily since there are so many clubs on campus, Club Rush lasts two days. So, if you’re indecisive or didn’t have enough time to look through all the clubs, you get an extra day to do so. If you miss Club Rush—not to fret. In January there will be a second Club Rush. This gives you another opportunity to view all the clubs, watch some perform and maybe join a club if possible. Although you can still join any club throughout the school year, regardless of whether you signed up during Club Rush or not. Signing up during Club Rush is an easier process as the club’s contact information is found on their booths; you can still find the information on the USB website, which can be found on the Lincoln High School webpage where a link to a spreadsheet that displays all of the clubs on campus and how to contact them—Most clubs also have an Instagram page, so a quick search can also help you find them if you need to contact or locate them. Zachary Nicols, the President of Speech and Debate club, says “People can join [clubs] by talking to [the President] directly or … talking with the club advisor.” He also goes on to say that Mr. Gadeke is also a good resource for people looking to join clubs. Mr. Gadeke is the Club campus director and works with clubs and organizing school events on campus, so if you need help contacting a club he is also a valuable resource to students.
Though, why should people even join a club? Clubs can take up lunch time or even school time, so if students must use up their free time being a part of a club, what is the benefit from it? As mentioned before, joining clubs is a wonderful way to make friends and meet new people on campus. Joining a club that relates to your hobby or interest allows you to interact with people who also share those same interests as you. The club provides a fun environment that allows you to interact with one another whilst bonding over shared interests. Luke Allen, a member in the Speech and Debate club, says that he joined because he thought it would look good on resume and a fun way to participate in school.. There are many clubs on campus that would look good on a resume but, in reality you can make any club look good on your resume. However our clubs that are community service oriented, or education oriented can look really good on your resume depending on what field of work you choose to go in. Luke Allen also mentions: “You can learn certain skills from the people around you and it increases social skills that are useful for the future.”
Connections are everything, they’re important to make friends but also later on in life knowing people with certain skill sets can be useful. Practicing social skills is incredibly important, even if you don’t go into a field of work where you directly interact with others, it’s beneficial to have connection skills for your everyday life. Amongst these things clubs are just fun for people to be a part of: new friends, new experiences, and new skills learned. All things considered, if you are not in a club already, you should definitely consider joining one!
