Mariah Carey’s very merry impact on Christmas holiday

She’s kinda like the Grinch the way she steals Christmas.
Mariah Carey’s very merry impact on Christmas holiday

It’s December, and she’s defrosting.  This time of year isn’t about presents, snow, or Santa–it’s all about Mariah Carey as she once again takes the world by snowstorm with her infamous 1994 song “All I Want For Christmas Is You” conquering radios and playlists alike this winter season.

As simple as it is magical, Mariah Carey understood how to create a Christmas staple when she made this song, combining winter nostalgia through bells and church choir elements with holiday love through easily palatable lyrics and melodies.  The success of this song has led to several covers being released by various artists internationally, and Carey has amassed over $60 million since 1994.  The song has made top charts around December consistently, and to many, she carries the title of “Queen of Christmas.”

Though almost 30 years old, people of all ages are familiar with this song, and it’s remained an important part of holiday tradition for the masses.  With over 1.5 billion streams on Spotify alone, it’s not uncommon to hear her familiar voice inside festively-decorated households across the globe.

Mariah’s holiday classic has left a notable impression on many of Lincoln High’s students, and these comments exemplify just that.

“It brings in Christmas cheer, as whenever I listen to it it brings in the ol time carols of a family spirit that I once knew is welcoming me into winter.  The bells are as if Santa was ringing on my doorbell.” – Zie Brown

“It’s a big part of Christmas.  I really like the song because she sings all these complicated and high notes, which is difficult to do.  It’s very impressive overall.” – Piper Dasig

“She makes my Christmas more exciting, and I always look forward to her music anytime Christmas comes around.” – Mayleeah Heilman

“Her voice is just so charming.  I wait for her every year to defrost.  She comes out of the glaciers ready for Christmas.  She makes me ready for the holidays.” – Arissa Farinas

From Lincoln High School’s newspaper, and probably the rest of the world: All hail the Queen of Christmas.
