Stockton- Christmas didn’t start with trees, lights, or Santa. Long before it became a Christian holiday, ancient cultures celebrated winter with festivals like Saturnalia in Rome and Yule in northern Europe. These parties included fires, feasts, and gift giving early versions of what we do now.
In the 4th century, Christians chose December 25th to celebrate the birth of Jesus and, over time, all these older traditions came together. Different countries added their own twists: Germany brought decorated trees, England made carols popular, and Latin American countries added colorful multi day celebrations.
As these traditions spread all around America, Christmas slowly turned into the family centered holiday we know today. The modern Santa, with his red suit and reindeer, became popular in the 1800s thanks to writers, artists, movies.
Now, Christmas is celebrated in tons of different ways around the world. Whether people focus on culture, religion, or just time with family, the holiday stays true to its main idea, spreading joy and bringing people together in the winter
