Stockton- Hanukkah is an eight day Jewish festival , and it dates way back in history when Jews were struggling to maintain their religion. A king named Antiochus IV disrespected them by asking them to leave their religion, and took control of their Jerusalem Temple. They did not take kindly to this, and a sect called the Maccabees rebelled against them and recovered their temple.
When they returned, they were intent on relighting the menorah. but they were faced with a problem. They had a tiny container of oil, sufficient for only a day. They went ahead and lit it despite this shortcoming. To their surprise, this small quantity of oil lasted for eight days, which took exactly the time they needed to make more. This is Hanukkah. And this is why it is observed for a period of eight days.
Now, people observe this holiday by lighting candles using a special menorah called a hanukkiah. One candle is lit on the first night, two on the next night, and so on until all eight candles are burning. Some families have an extra candle called shamash. which is used to light all other candles. They recite prayers, sing songs, and simply enjoy this moment with their families.
Food is a very big part of Hanukkah celebrations too, especially food fried in oil. Latkes, which are potato pancakes, and sufganiyot, which are jelly filled doughnuts, are some of these foods. Often, a game with a spinning top called a dreidel is played for kids, and gifts can be given too.
As a whole, Hanukkah is really all about remembering the miracle, enjoying light, and celebrating with family in a fun filled way. Happy Hanukkah to those who celebrate!
